This is one part of a set of orchestral dances entitled Danças do Coração (Dances of the Heart).

Each piece is an exploration of dance music and the way some indigenous forms create subtle shifts in the meter with hesitations or anticipations. For these pieces, these “shifts” are written in for the orchestra.

Dança apaixonado begins in 15/16 with an anticipation of the beat. That anticipation becomes even more slight as the music moves into 31/16, although it feels like the orchestra is playing in 4/4. The point of the music is to create the illusion of dance and yet capture the essence of what dance musicians have known for centuries: good music doesn’t fit into a square box.mus

Forum with Home Recording Techniques

Here is a forum with lots of different comments about home recording techniques.  There is a lot of information here; hopefully some of it you’ll find useful as you work on making your own recordings for TwtrSymphony

How We Work

The process is simple:
  • I write a short piece of music, 140 beats or less (more on that later).
  • The parts (and click track) are sent to the various musicians around the world who…
  • record their parts in remote sessions (using what equipment they have available).
  • When they’re done recording, they get the recordings back to me via DropBox.
(if you don’t have DropBox installed, click here http://db.tt/blPSL7rX)
  • I mix all the parts together to create a virtual orchestra.
There is no money at present; everyone is volunteering their time.
I compose the music right now because we’re still in the stage of outlining the process, fixing all the bugs. Eventually the goal is to open the process to other composers.
About my music
My music tends to be highly rhythmical and uses odd meters (11/8, 13/8) to create a feeling of two and three beat measures. This way, we actually have a lot more than 140 sub-beats in the music, but the over all feeling is still less than the 140 limit.

You can hear an example here: Flown the Coop
Flown the Coop is a concept piece down with just a string orchestra to prove the concept works.
There are also articles posted on interchangingidioms.blogspot.com - search the tag TwtrSymphony. You can read about TwtrSymphony as well as see samples of parts.
Sound Interesting???

This is our first “proof of concept” piece.  It isn’t the full orchestra, just the strings. Designed to prove we can do what we set out to do and turn around music from conception to publication in a short period of time. “Flown the Coop” was just six days from first notes on paper to providing a recording to the interested party.  We can’t say who the interested party is just yet… nor can we release the recording. But as soon as we can, you’ll hear of it!
