The Tuba is an interesting instrument to write for. Too many lump it in with creating a pompous bass line, when it can really create some lovely melodic lines.

Adding in some low brass, here is the Trombone audition. I’m a trombone player from way back, so this is definitely a challenge. 

Another grand staff instrument is the piano.  This piece is a bit challenging because, depending on the piano, the rapid repeat of notes may or may not be possible.  I could play that section (not the whole audition) on my Baldwin Baby Grand, but not at the Steinway at Denver University.  We’ll see how the pianists do with this one!

I really enjoyed writing the French Horn audition; it’s such a versatile instrument.
